Contestata la colpa di un bolide per l estinzione P/T

L´estinzione di massa al termine Permiano - Triassico non é stata improvvisa ed per colpa di un bolide, secondo nuovi studi pubblicati ora sulla rivista "International Journal of Earth Sciences". I ricercatori hanno studiato l´affioramento tipo (GSSP) a Meishan, China, che mostrerebbe che la crisi biologica aveva iniziato ben prima del confine definito. Anche altre sezioni studiate in China, ed nella regione della ex-Tetide centrale ed occidentale, mostrerebbero che l´estinzione é avvenuta prima. Durante questo periodo si sono estinti molti organismi, tra cui molte specie di ammoniti, coralli, radiolarie, fusline (un gruppo di foraminiferi) ed molti brachiopodi. In tutte le sezioni studiate il livello di estinzione é centimetri sotto il livello del Triassico - ed sotto il presunto impatto del bolide. Questo dimostrerebbe che non fu in principio il bolide ad far estinguere i biota permiani.

Abstract   The mass extinction at the Permian–Triassic Boundary (PTB) is said to have been abrupt and probably caused by an extraterrestrial impact. However, evidence from the Global Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) of the base of the Induan at Meishan, China, shows that the biotic crisis began prior to the level, in beds 25 and 26 at which the postulated impact event occurred. Evidence of such an earlier biotic crisis occurs in other sections in South China, and in central and western Tethyan regions. This event is characterized by the extinction of a range of faunas, including corals, deep-water radiolarians, most fusulinids and pseudotirolitid ammonoids, and many Permian brachiopods. In all sections, this extinction level is usually a few decimeters to meters below that of the main mass extinction in the event beds (25 and 26) at Meishan, and their correlatives elsewhere. This earlier extinction event happened before the postulated bolide impact at the level of beds 25 and 26, and constrains interpretation of the mechanisms that brought about this greatest mass extinction.

A mio parere sono state più cause..incluso una sorta di "effetto serra" e vulcanismo permiano. Se ci aggiungiamo l'asteroide, e altre cause possibili..è comprensibile che genere di catastrofe sia stata

insisto che le eruzioni vulcaniche tipo i trappi del deccan sono ben documentate in corrispondenza delle estinzioni di massa. Non so se è una combinazione....
comunque il problema è senz'altro ancora aperto
